"Urology Surgery"

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital / Urology

I attended today (02/07/18) for urology surgery. I attended at 11.00 as per appointment. I was seen at 12.00 (not 11.00) -( as had been witten on the day surgery notes), for observations and Ted stockings to be applied, I explained I was very nervous and would like to discuss a pre med with the anaesthetist. At 15.00 I was met with a doctor I did not recognise who did not know what procedure was going to take place. I had to explain this to him including symptoms I wanted eliviated -( my surgeon!)

At 16.00 I was crying in pain from severe cystitis which I get if I do not drink enough. I was allowed water until 11.30 only. No staff member checked I was okay or offered analgesia.I believe current anaesthetic guidelines say you can have clear fluids until two hours before a procedure, considering the heat I thought this would have been allowed. But no one was offered. No one was kept updated throughout the day. The reception staff in particular were harsh in their response to a question I had.

At 17.00 I was asked to change and answered some questions. I had not seen an anaesthetist and told them again I hadn't. I was told this was fine. At 17.10 I was put in the anaesthetics waiting room where I waited for 50 mins to be told the operation was cancelled. I was not told when the surgery could be rescheduled. I explained that I have a nursing role in which time is very carefully arranged off and this would be disruptive for some very vulnerable individuals I care for. I left the theatres and could not find my way out, amongst my tears and distress no one helped me out the building (or even the floor!) . I was so upset at a lack of basic nursing care and compassion. I now have a temperature and severe pain as a result of a bladder infection from lack of water. I would appreciate my surgery being rescheduled for this week. Thank you.
