"Cervical disc operation"

About: Orthopaedics & Spine Specialist Hospital Site

I underwent surgery to have a prolapsed disc removed from my neck in May after months of suffering severe neck and arm pain, with the damaged disc pressing on my spinal chord. The surgeon explained the options to me clearly and I realised an operation was the only way I could return to normal health.

I was nervous about the operation, having bone taken from my hip to help join up my veterbrae. The surgeon was very kind, calm and gentle and explained what was involved. He answered any questions I had and explained what was involved with recovery after such a major operation. Throughout the treatment itself, and after the procedure I had the utmost confidence him. I also believe that he would only recommend procedures if he thought they would be successful.

On the day itself the staff were kind and courteous, including the anaesthetist team.

I was worried about the scars I may have been left with, but just six weeks after the operation the scar on neck is barely noticeable, as is the one on my hip.

While I was devastated that I had to have the operation, I can say that I’m so pleased that I have had it done. The pain is subsiding and after a lengthy recovery period I’m hoping to return to my normal active life. While having the operation has not been easy, the feeling of not being in constant crippling pain has made the whole experience worthwhile. I finally feel that I’m starting to get my life back.
