"Doctor despondent and unhelpful"

About: Hexham General Hospital

I hit a crisis with my mental health and decided to go in rather than kill myself. The doctor shrugged his shoulders at my cry for help and gave me the crisis number and walked away without saying good bye. He made me distraught and didn't help at all. No empathy, no sympathy, no help. I have a suspected slipped disk in my back causing more pain and trauma. He didn't analyse me at all, didn't look or touch. Just told me to take paracetamol which I've tried for 12 years.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. You real showed courage by seeking help during what must have been an extremely difficult time for you. All the more disappointing to hear then, that you didn’t get the compassionate response that you needed from us at the time. I am so sorry.

With your help I would like to look in more detail at what happened, please email us with the date and approx. time of your arrival. This will allow me to understand which staff were on duty at the time. If you feel comfortable doing so please email me with your name and date of birth, this will allow me to discuss your review with the doctor involved in your care. He may still be very unaware of the impact his actions had on you. Our email is patient.experience@nhct.nhs.uk.

I’m really hoping that things are feeling a little easier for you at the minute and that you’ve found someone you trust to talk to?

In the meantime i just wondered if it might be helpful to keep the following numbers to hand ?

The Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust’s Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team on 03031231146 - the team operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They have experienced mental health staff who can offer you home treatment for as an alternative to hospital admission.

If you don’t feel comfortable contacting this number you can always seek help from your GP or the Samaritans anytime on 116 123.

Take care of yourself.

With all best wishes,

Annie

Annie Laverty – Chief Experience Officer
