"An absolute Farce"

About: Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

I was on this ward recently having an anterior prolapse repair . I was told it would be a day case ( which surprised me having been hospitalised for 4 days with a posterior repair)

Last year I had an uroscopy & biopsy on the same ward & told I could have my prolapse repaired but then spent 6 months chasing it up and then another 5 waiting for the operation.

I was told I would be first down to theatre so they could discharge me a couple of hours after I’d returned from recovery . However I when I felt my bladder was full enough to go to the loo , I rang the bell & had to wait for an awfully long time before a nurse appeared .

The nurses & HCA were sitting around chatting for most of the day or popping out for food . The HCA referred to me as She or by my surname & seemed fixated by her weight loss programme but when I needed help , everyone disappeared .

To cut a long story short I couldn’t pass urine & had to have a catheter replaced & be kept in overnight. Trying to find me a bed was a joke & I only knew what was happening because I could overhear the telephone conversations .

I didn’t have my obs done regularly & when I finally got moved to the other side of Ward 24 , I was waiting for someone to come to see me for ages .

I was discharged the next day & when I left I only got a copy of my discharge letter and no information about the procedure & aftercare .

I had to ring the hospital today to get some information because I’m so sore & uncomfortable with my vaginal stitches & worry , almost 6 weeks on , why they haven’t dissolved. Apparently it could be a while yet but if I’d been given the information at the time of my discharge, it would have put my mind at rest .

The staff were not over worked , most ladies on the ward had fairly ordinary procedures. They were planning a staff member’s leaving party for most of the time I was there . That and “nipping to M&S “ were the topics most mentioned

I don’t like to complain & have been advised to make an official complaint but I don’t like to .

Today I had to ring the consultant’s secretary because I hadn’t had a date for my 6 week check up to be told

“We’re a bit behind “ You can say that again !!

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I am very sorry to read that of the poor service and communication you received whilst in our care, the level of service that you have described is not what we wish to offer.

It would be very beneficial for our services and for future patients if you could discuss the matters you have raised further with our Trust’s Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS). This would also allow us look into the matters you have raised more thoroughly.

Please call our Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 206 6261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net

kindest regards
