"Day Surgery - nice staff but just one concern..."

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital / Urology

I went to Day Surgery Ward/Unit in the Treatment Centre at the Royal Shrewsbury hospital site of this NHS trust for a urology procedure/operation in June 2018. The staff on Day Surgery Ward/Unit, including reception, the ward itself, urologist and theatres were all friendly and welcoming, which was nice and am grateful for.

However, the anaesthetist did not put any monitors on me for while I was under my general anaesthetic so my vital signs were not routinely kept an eye on while I was under which was concerning for me, particularly as I have a rare condition that requires these be kept an eye on, such as my blood pressure and heart rate.

They said I refused to have the monitoring equipment put on me which was false as I never refused anything and have no idea where they got this idea from. Unfortunately, the recovery ward staff also copied this anaesthetist and failed to monitor any of my vitals, except for my oxygen saturation levels. Later, upon discharge from your Day Surgery Ward/Unit, the nurse and healthcare assistant looking after me also failed to check my blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation levels once I returned from the recovery area to the ward and also immediately prior to being discharged.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for getting in touch regarding your recent experience at the Day Surgery Unit and I note the positive feedback you have shared, which I will pass on to the relevant departments. I am sorry for the difficulties you experienced with inadequate monitoring during and after your procedure. I will also share this feedback with the Anaesthetics Department and Theatre Recovery staff so they are aware of your concerns. If you would like us to look into what happened in more detail please contact PALS on 01743 261691 so we can advise you appropriately on how best to investigate your concerns.

I do hope you are recovering well following your procedure.

Kind Regards

Patient Experience Team
