"Worst experience in ENT"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary / Ear, Nose and Throat

Worst hospital experience. Having had various surgeries over the years, this was by far the worst experience. Established a date for my tonsilectomy but no letter given. Rang TWELVE days in a row to confirm if this was going ahead. Promised a call back every single day. No call. Both myself and partner have senior roles with large commitments so trying to arrange time off was a nightmare with this as he was only person in Bradford able to come with me. Finally got confirmation in post 6 days before. Cancelled and re-arranged THREE times. Arrive on day and given different consultant to one i’ve been under. Noted allergies throughout all discussions, seemed a shock to new consultant who had to go off and sort this. Bad reaction to previous anaesthetic so notififed a total of SEVEN staff members that I have panic attack while coming around and would be beneficial to have partner there.

Anaesthetist and Consultant agreed with this as did other staff. Had no faith it would be communicated to recovery staff, it wasn’t. Had panic attack resulting in increased pain following tonsilectomy. Avoidable. Recovery staff not aware of situation, suprise suprise. Had pain relief prior to waking up, morphine etc. Once this wore off consultant gave pain relief advice for the rest of day however according to nurses ‘failed to write it on my paperwork’ resulting in me being given paracetemol and crying in agony for hours. Requested ibuprofen, told couldnt have it as wasnt listed. Cried my eyes out in agony with no help. Asked partner to go to local shop and purchase some. Finally complained to nurses and asked to self discharge, was given tramadol by consultant and lots of apology. Both parties blaming each other, all pain relief had long expired and no more given. Shocking. Finally discharged, asked for medication and told just paracetomol. In agony 72hrs over weekend, saw GP monday given Codiene and horrified I had not left with any pain relief. I would NEVER return to this hospital after this shocking experience.

I am truly sorry to read of such a poor experience at our hospital.

I find a number of the issues raised in your comment to be very concerning. Good communication both between professionals and with our patients is extremely important, as is ensuring patients have a high standard of care, including adequate pain relief at all times.

Unfortunately, there is not enough information here in order for us to investigate the matter further.

I would ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team on 01274 36 4810 or via email on patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk, who will ensure the matter is thoroughly reviewed.
