I was recently admitted to Ward 9 due to breathing difficulties, I was there for about a week and received good care from the nursing staff and doctors. In the small four bed bay there was an very upsetting incident with another patient one night.
The following morning an auxiliary nurse was seeing to me, we were just chatting, and they were asking how I was, I was telling them about various visitors. A care assistant was also in the bay. All of a sudden the charge nurse was at the entrance of the bay saying they wanted to speak to the care assistant and auxiliary nurse - very abrupt, wanted to speak to them straight away, not even after they had finished what they were doing. I was very taken aback, I would not speak to a young child like that let alone order adults around in that way.
I saw them taking in the office. When the auxiliary returned I asked them what that was all about and was told that they had been told to stop talking. I was very upset with what had happened in the night and needed to talk, not necessarily about that but anything to help to come to terms with experience.
Care does not just need to be medical, the staff may be used to such experiences but most people are not and need to talk.
