I arrived at A&E just past midnight, I was immediately assessed and rushed for a CT scan. My head had been squashed in machinery and I had to quickly pull my head out before it being completely crushed, doing so I removed a 150mm long section of scalp down to the bone. The CT scan showed no breakage to the scull and no internal bleeding. A surgeon on duty then looked at the wound and on further examination thought I should go to theater for surgery. A specialist was called in and he couldn't believe I had been so lucky to have removed my head without crushing the scull, The wound was treated very professionally in the A&E ward , I was conscious and saw many staff come to see such an injury for their first time. A student doctor/surgeon was talked through everything the surgeon was doing which also reassured me, especially when the student asked why a certain procedure was not the specialists choice to which he replied that procedure would not be cosmetically suitable for the inevitable scare.
I was allowed home at 05.00.
The attention I received was excellent, the staff worked well as a team and I can't praise them enough. Pilgrim Hospital is not my local hospital as I live in Bedford.
