"A Spanish theatre nurse who showed extra care"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Orthopaedics (Bones, Joints and Fractures)

(as the patient),

I went in for a total knee replacent recently I arrived early in the morning, had my pré ops & was seen by the surgeon & anaesthetist. I was able to talk freely to them & they answered any questions I thought I had.

Imagine my delight & surprise when this gowned lady with a huge welcoming smile on her face approached me & introduced herself to me.

She explained she was the theatre nurse I was going to meet when I went down stairs, what would happen, how the spinal would effect me etc where I would be when I came out of surgery etc.

Of course she was able to answer or help those silly questions I didn’t want to bother the doctors with.    It was, no she was just what I needed before surgery.

I subsequently watched the 3 other ladies who came into the ward for joint replacements after me receive the same professionalism, care & individual reassurance.

Then to my delight & surprise after a long day she returned to check up on us at the end of her long day.

I will never forget this genuinely kind, caring & professional individual.

Dear Morgan1

thank you for taking the time after your recent knee replacement to post comments on patient opinion.

I am pleased that you found a member of our staff kind, caring and compassionate at a time when you will have had anxieties around having an operation.

Staff always appreciate positive comments such as this- it is such a morale boost for nurses who are working so hard to deliver patient centred care in a busy environment

I have forwarded this onto the Theatre Manager to ensure the staff member is identified and made aware of your kind comments

I do hope you are recovering well and up and about

Kindest Regards

Yvonne

Update posted by Morgan1 (the patient)

Thank you Yvonne Wright. I hope you are aware we can give an alias name, as I did.

I do not wish the nurse involved to be on the end of negative repercussions.

Are you aware what the surgeons & anaesthetists think of her kindness & how it makes their patients feel?

It would appear to me that the caring I received was a rare example of what we should all be getting, be it in hospital, a carehome or school & it will be this that I remember.

No doubt it relaxed me before my operation & hopefully will help with recovery!

Is this not what we wish all nurses to be doing?

I hope this old / caring nursing is not demeaned & discouraged.
