"Receptionist refusing to make appointment"

About: Bersted Green Surgery

I feel so saddened and frustrated to be writing this but I do hope for a reply and some understanding.

I have suffered with ear infections for a number of years and most of the time I am turned away, the pain then becomes too much and I see an out of hours doctor at the hospital who prescribes me medication immediately.

Alas, my ear is blocked and I’m in pain. I use olive oil for 2 weeks to see if I can help the situation without wasting a precious appointment

2 weeks pass I now cannot bear the pain so I see one of the many GP’s, again I am turned away to be told come back if the condition worsens. She said I don’t have a history of infections which is odd because I’ve had about 6 so why aren’t they on my records?

3 weeks have then passed I’m struggling at work I can’t sleep or drive so i contacted a hearing clinic/ audiologist

She is shocked my GP has sent me away. I have paid for micro suctioning but she cannot get near enough to my ear drum due to swelling. She hands me a referral to take to my GP in hope I am prescribed some anti biotics as an infection is now brewing.

If the inflammation is treated the audiologist can do her work and I’m free of pain!

I rang this morning and the receptionist told me to bring the letter in.

I am more than shocked the receptionists told me I quote word for word ‘there are more serious cases than yours’ which meant they would not show my gp my referral or the photos of my canals which shows the huge blockage.

How on earth can a receptionist deny me an appointment?

This meant I had left work early to again be turned away even though they told me to come in?! I wasn’t even allowed an appointment because they didn’t feel I deserved one. That isn’t their decision to make. All I wanted was for a professional to look at my referral and photographs.

I’m devastated to be told to ‘try again tomorrow’ but they only had 1 appointment which I can’t make due to work- I can’t afford to keep leaving work early to be sent away.

I have proof I need medication yet your receptionists feel like playing doctors today. I felt totally humiliated and the audiologist is encouraging me to change practises due to incompetence

Here’s to another weekend of being in total pain and not hearing a thing, thanks for nothing berated green.

I am sorry that this is your impression of the care you have received. You have posted your comments anonymously and I obviously will not be going into any details on this public forum about your medical history but do feel that I need to defend the clinicians and receptionists in my response. When you have been examined and given advice but then not prescribed antibiotics then this is not you being turned away. Unfortunately there is no instant fix for otitis media infections which are usually viral and so not responsive to antibiotics.

The doctor was shown the form that you brought from the audiologist and it was the doctor's decision that antibiotics were not indicated and that an emergency appointment on the same day was not warranted. It was certainly not the receptionists who made those decisions. If our emergency clinic is full then they will ask for advice before turning anyone away to ensure medically urgent cases are seen. Our receptionists fulfil an extremely demanding role where they must pass on decisions made by the clinicians and follow guidelines laid down by them.

I hope that you do not leave the surgery but that is of course your choice. I would suggest that if you have complaints about your clinical treatment that you make them to the surgery so that we can answer them in detail and hopefully reassure you. I understand that your frustration has led you to posting on this forum but I felt that I had to respond to some of the accusations made to ensure other patients are not caused anxiety about the surgery. If you would like to discuss this further with either myself or one of the doctors then we would be very happy to meet with you.

Kind regards
