An absolutely lousy experience was experienced by a relative of mine on this ward. Staff seemed disinterested and the senior nursing staff we came into contact with seemed to have a very poor attitude.
It seemed to me as though patients were left to fend for themselves. I felt that cleanliness on the ward was poor, this not only includes the ward itself but I felt that the nurses didn't look particularly clean- uniforms looked grubby and hair not tied back. Furthermore, it is my view that basic hygiene precautions, if you were fortunate enough to come face to face with a member of the nursing staff, were not adhered to.
On the bay my relative was on, I very rarely saw a visit from a nurse. Warm food was supposed to be served, but it was cold and congealed. I felt that there was a total lack of communication between staff on different shifts. The elderly patient I visited told me that they had not been seen by a Doctor until another relative insisted on it - 2 days after their operation. A thoroughly horrible experience. I feel like more staff training is needed and I certainly believe that some of the nursing staff on this ward need further training in social skills and empathy.
Not once did I hear my relative being asked if they were in pain, medication was given to them with no explanation as to what it was, when it was queried, I found the response surly and very unfriendly. I did not hear one nurse said 'My name is ' or make any attempt to introduce themselves. I believe that the way patients are looked after on this ward needs looking at as a matter of urgency.
