"Poor experience of care"

About: Harrogate District Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

An absolutely lousy experience was experienced by a relative of mine on this ward. Staff seemed disinterested and the senior nursing staff we came into contact with seemed to have a very poor attitude.

It seemed to me as though patients were left to fend for themselves. I felt that cleanliness on the ward was poor, this not only includes the ward itself but I felt that the nurses didn't look particularly clean- uniforms looked grubby and hair not tied back. Furthermore, it is my view that basic hygiene precautions, if you were fortunate enough to come face to face with a member of the nursing staff, were not adhered to.

On the bay my relative was on, I very rarely saw a visit from a nurse.  Warm food was supposed to be served, but it was cold and congealed. I felt that there was a total lack of communication between staff on different shifts.

The elderly patient I visited told me that they had not been seen by a Doctor until another relative insisted on it - 2 days after their operation. A thoroughly horrible experience. I feel like more staff training is needed and I certainly believe that some of the nursing staff on this ward need further training in social skills and empathy.

Not once did I hear my relative being asked if they were in pain, medication was given to them with no explanation as to what it was, when it was queried,  I found the response surly and very unfriendly. I did not hear one nurse said 'My name is ' or make any attempt to introduce themselves. I believe that the way patients are looked after on this ward needs looking at as a matter of urgency.

Good morning.

I'm sorry to hear about your relative's experience.

We're not sure which ward you're referring to, unfortunately, so if you could please contact our Patient Experience Team we can take this forward and look into this in greater detail with you.
