"My recent Breast Screening appointment"

About: NHS Tayside / East Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as a service user),

In response to an invite for breast screening, I attended an appointment within the mobile screening unit at Ardblair Medical Practice in Blairgowrie this week. This is my second experience of breast screening, the first appointment being at Ninewells Hospital. My experience this week was greatly disapointing and a complete contrast to my first exepreinece at Ninewells where I was treated with dignity and respect.
The Member of staff who carried out the screening failed to introduce herself, was very scripted in her approach and failed to see me as an individual. She worked at such a pace to position me into the imaging equipment, that she failed to provide me with any appreciation of any discomfort I might feel, physically or psychologically.
Whilst I aknowledge appointment times are limited, there is absolutley no excuse within that limited time to show care, compassion and dignity to every woman, whether you are appointmnent number 1 or 100.
If we are to encourage people to engage with important screening programmes we need to ensure their experience is a postive person centred one.
I am truly passionate about the NHS, the services it provides and on the whole the committed people who work tirelessly to provide this great service. My feedback is intended constructively to allow my experience to be shared and better understood

Thank you.

Dear “Dignity”

I am sorry to hear that your experience when attending the mobile Breast Screening Unit in Blairgowrie was not what we would have wanted it to be. As you say, if we are to encourage people to engage with our screening programme we need to ensure their experience is a positive, person-centred one. The mammographers should routinely introduce themselves and explain the procedure as they go along and I apologise that this did not happen on this occasion.

To enable me to investigate this further, it would be helpful to obtain some additional information. If you would be happy to do so, I would be grateful if you could contact me directly on 01382 425531.

Should you prefer not to do so, please be assured that your feedback has been shared with the staff for learning.

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.

Kind regards.

Debbie Archibald

Breast Screening Services Manager
