After a very positive labour experience, wonderfully supported by a calm & encouraging midwife our situation changed rapidly due to my uterus not contracting properly post-partum. Without hesitation the midwife responded and within seconds our room was filled with clinical staff all working to stop my haemorrhage. Even in this potentially dangerous & frightening situation, everyone present was calm & focused and they kept me informed of everything they were doing. Within minutes the bleeding was under control and I was happily enjoying skin-to-skin with my newborn.
Immediately after this, it became clear that myself & my baby had a pre-existing infection. A course of IV antibiotics was prescribed for us both which unfortunately meant we were committed to a lengthy stay on the Maternity Ward- not what any parents are hoping/planning for. But I can honestly say that every single person on Wards 9 & 10 have been so supportive each day, looking after my baby with patience, care & regular monitoring and ensuring I was coping myself with the long stay away from my toddler which has made things particularly hard. They have turned a nightmare situation into one which has been much easier to bear in the circumstances. As a consequence our baby is thriving and has responded well to treatment & we are able to leave days earlier than planned. We are especially grateful to the midwives who organised a side-room for us to stay in to allow us our own space & privacy due to the length of our stay- this was so important to us, we cannot thank you enough! How lucky we are to have access to facilities and care of this standard, we cannot fault a single thing- thank you so much.
