"my husband's six month stay in UCLH "

About: University College Hospital / Gastrointestinal surgery

(as a relative),

My husband was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer at the beginning of 2011.

After having the second cycle of his chemo, (prior to an operation) he became seriously ill and was admitted to UCLH in May and, after one night, was admitted to ITU and placed on a ventilator many times.

He then had to have a life saving operation completely unrelated to his diagnosed problem. He remained in ITU for nine weeks where he was looked after by the most magnificent team of very professional nurses, doctors and consultants. We are so grateful for all their care.

My husband then went on to T16 but returned to ITU for one week and back to T16 where the care of every single person working on that floor was wonderful. It made us feel confident and safe which I am sure aids recovery.

My husband has now gone for rehab prior to having the operation he requires so will be back at UCLH and ITU and we pray for a positive result.

We feel so lucky we were able to go to UCLH. It became our home for six months and I feel, with very few exceptions, those at the top have really got it right.
