"I am deeply indebted to all who treated me"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

In the early hours of one day in June I was struck down with severe abdominal pains on the left side. My wife brought me in to A&E at about 1am. We were whisked through and processed very swiftly. I was checked over and given an X-Ray quickly and because of concerns about the source of the issue I was admitted to Ward 6 and was in my bed by 2.15am. I was in increasing pain and was administered morphine by two lovely nurses.

Later that day I was checked out frequently and made comfortable. I was given a CT-contrast scan and was later advised by Dr McCallum that I had suffered pulmonary embolism and 2 other clots were spotted. All was explained clearly to me and how I would be treated in the ward and after discharge.

I was kept in under observation and moved to Ward 4 for one night and allowed to leave.

I am getting much better  but I realise how fortunate I was ,and am, to have been so well managed by everyone at BGH. All nursing staff were helpful and kind as were any other staff member , from the cheery porters to the medics and their pupils.

Having never been admitted to any hospital in my 64 years I was delighted to find that the reason we admire the NHS so much is because it deals with all comers in a fair and compassionate manner and at all times. I never doubted that this was not the case but it was greatly comforting to find that it offers such a marvellous service.

I am deeply indebted to all who treated me when I most needed it and send my sincere thanks to them. I am very lucky.

Dear WJTB,

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us of your experience in the Borders General Hospital. It is never pleasant to be unwell enough to come to hospital but I am really delighted that you felt well cared for and very importantly well informed throughout your stay.

Ward 6 (Medical Assessment Unit) is a very busy and demanding environment for both patients and staff but as a team, we endeavour to deliver care to patients to the absolute best of our ability, bearing in mind that most of us live and work in this community along with our families and friends. Having worked in other larger healthcare environments, I would say that one of the BGH's strengths is that we are a team working within and for our local community!

I will certainly forward your lovely feedback to the Acute Medicine team and I know (from a personal point of view!) that your kind words will aid us in continuing to deliver the best standards of care that we possibly can.

Many thanks again,

Lynn

Dear WJTB,

Thank you for getting in touch in this way. Getting to know directly from the patient how they felt about the care they received is helpful and in your case a source of reassurance that our approach has been the right one.

I hope that your need to use our hospital services remains the exception to the norm for you and that you are making a good recovery.

Kind regards.

Ed
