In the early hours of one day in June I was struck down with severe abdominal pains on the left side. My wife brought me in to A&E at about 1am. We were whisked through and processed very swiftly. I was checked over and given an X-Ray quickly and because of concerns about the source of the issue I was admitted to Ward 6 and was in my bed by 2.15am. I was in increasing pain and was administered morphine by two lovely nurses.
Later that day I was checked out frequently and made comfortable. I was given a CT-contrast scan and was later advised by Dr McCallum that I had suffered pulmonary embolism and 2 other clots were spotted. All was explained clearly to me and how I would be treated in the ward and after discharge.
I was kept in under observation and moved to Ward 4 for one night and allowed to leave.
I am getting much better but I realise how fortunate I was ,and am, to have been so well managed by everyone at BGH. All nursing staff were helpful and kind as were any other staff member , from the cheery porters to the medics and their pupils.
Having never been admitted to any hospital in my 64 years I was delighted to find that the reason we admire the NHS so much is because it deals with all comers in a fair and compassionate manner and at all times. I never doubted that this was not the case but it was greatly comforting to find that it offers such a marvellous service.
I am deeply indebted to all who treated me when I most needed it and send my sincere thanks to them. I am very lucky.
