"Here to help?"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

My partner suffered a high spinal cord injury last year leaving him Quadriplegic, he was admitted to Grantham for care whilst waiting for a care plan to be set up at home. He was in ward 6 for 4 months before being discharged, we were unimpressed with the service then but that's another story. Recently he's suffered with a UTI as he has to self catheterise, this has lead to the use of more urine bags than normal meaning he ran out with 2 days until his next delivery. I went into ward 6 to see if they could spare a few bags in this emergency situation, it's a one off as being new to this new way of life we're learning as we go - we will now be ordering more stock. If Andy is unable to self-catheterise he will suffer an autonomic dysreflexia attack, this is life threatening. I spoke to 4 separate nurses who made me feel small, irresponsible and stupid for thinking they could help me. They said he wasn't their patient and if they gave them out to everybody there wouldn't be enough for the other patients, I hardly believe this is a common question. Luckily EAU were lovely, understood our dilemma and provided us with a pack which included urine bags and an emergency helpline if we find ourselves in this situation again. They redeemed my faith in Grantham hospital, a service available to help.

Firstly I am sorry for the lack of help from the staff on the ward to your situation. Although we have to manage our stock carefully, we should always show care and compassion with an understanding to others situations and where your partner is involved, who we do know there should have been no hesitation in supplying the bags as we know the trauma you have both been through.

May I also apologise to you personally for how you were made to feel, this falls well below the attitudes, values and behaviours expected of our staff for which I am sorry. I am in the process of sharing your experience with all the ward staff as a learning event to ensure this does not happen to anyone else.

I hope you feel reassured and your partner is well, if you need to discuss anything else please do not hesitate to contact me on the ward.

Regards

Tracey Pemberton
