"Nightmare stay on G1"

About: York Hospital / Breast surgery

I had been told prior to my surgery that I would recover on G1 as I needed high dependency special care. What an awful experience. The nursing staff were abysmal, they had absolutely no consideration or respect for patients, they were loud, stroppy, constantly complaining and I came to dread the night shift coming on duty as they would shriek and chatter and keep patients awake all night.

3am being really sick and unable to rest whilst having to listen to such chaos. Whilst recovering from major surgery I found this unbelievable, the lack of nursing care. I was moved to a side room because I needed ‘special care’ being unable to move or do anything for myself, however the next morning no one checked me. My door remained closed from the night before. My call button was put out of reach. My curtains remained closed. I had no water, was dehydrated, and felt helpless as I deteriorated and could not summon help.

My consultant happened to do her rounds at 12 mid-day and was shocked to see the state I was in, immediately calling the nurses in. Unaccceptable.

I am extremely concerned to read this message, I apologise profusely for the experience itself and for our late response to this comment.

Please could I encourage you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison team (PALS) who will be able to take more details about your experience and work with the G1 team to get you a full response? Without your details I am limited in terms of how I can help you. We encourage all feedback and need to learn from mistakes made, so please do get in touch. You can call PALS on 01904 726262 or email them on pals@york.nhs.uk - they will be a good starting point for taking this further.

Thank you for taking the time to send in this comment, and I hope we can help you further with this matter. Best wishes.
