"Frightening!"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital

Admitted to A&E during the night when I became confused and started showing signs of having had a stroke. Was assessed by an assistant practitioner, whatever one of those is, who was loud and obviously thought she was wonderful! My main concern was the severe headache and relentless vomiting. A CT was carried out followed by a second - both I have to say without my permission. However, I felt too ill to complain. I was eventually given IV drugs and some hours later felt a little better. I was certainly well enough to escape after it was decided I needed a lumber puncture! After a couple of days, it was found I was suffering from a middle ear infection, which had caused the dreadful symptoms. Thankfully, I had refused the lumber puncture suggested. How could you get something so wrong and how many other medical errors are performed on patients who know no better? Always question everything and never take the word of a junior doctor.

no better? Thankfully I do!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience in our ED at the Royal Stoke hospital. I have shared your feedback with a Senior Consultant within the Emergency Department. She wishes to convey her apologies for the lack of communication around the tests you underwent and would like to assure you that all patients who are seen by a Nurse Practitioner are discussed with a Senior Doctor. The Consultant has also offered to meet with you to discuss your care. If you would like to take the opportunity to meet with the Consultant, or if you would like to provide additional information and allow us to further investigate your concerns, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01782 676450 or via email to patientadvice.uhnm@nhs.net.

With kind regards

Rebecca Pilling, Quality Improvement Facilitator: Patient Experience.
