Over the winter period I was admitted to busy ward 7 for a short stay after my operation.
The ward was a very busy environment with a range of patients. In the room I stayed there was around six ladies. The ward was short staffed and extremely busy. At times asking for help was a challenge as you were aware of how busy the staff were and did not want to be an inconvenience. A couple of days into my stay and a few patients changes within the room I was fed up and ready to go home to my children and husband.
A student nurse who came on shift that day made my time in hospital bearable and allowed me to stay and recover. Alanna treated myself and each patient in the room with dignity and care and regardless of how busy or chaotic the ward was she was patient and spent her time. Another patient in the room was having to consider care instead of going home something that was upsetting for her and us to hear and witness. The doctor who spoke to her about this issue showed no compassion or care surround the situation. Alana recognised the lady to be overwhelmed and talked to her like a human. Something the doctor had lacked. She treated each one of us in the kindest manner and cared In the busiest situations. The days she was not in the ward were challenging. I can only hope she is able to receive this and understand the impact she had on my road to recovery.I would also like to thank the junior Dr’s who were on shift over my time and all the staff who helped me over my period of illness. I would be greatful if this could be passed on to those concerned.
