"I doubt that the service could have been improved"

About: General practices in Fife Queen Margaret Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

Early this year, I noticed that a small lesion on the bridge of my nose had refused to heal after a number of weeks so I made an appointment with my excellent GP surgery based in Crossgates, Fife, who saw me at short notice even though they were very busy.

A referral was made to Dr Sergeant, Consultant Dermatologist, at Queen Margaret Hospital who saw me only 14 days later. Dr Sergeant diagnosed a pre-cancerous lesion known as an actinic (or solar) keratosis then clearly explained how it had arisen and advised that the most suitable treatment was cryotherapy. This was undertaken immediately (and quite painlessly) via a spray in conjunction with a transparent protective shield that had circular holes in it to accommodate a wide range of lesions.

I was very happy with the service I received and even more impressed a week later when my actinic keratosis, now scabbed over, dropped off with fresh skin underneath.

Some four months later, I have just had a follow-up consultation at the Queen Margaret Hospital and met Tina, a very knowledgeable and personable nurse, who gave me the all-clear.

From the moment I spoke with my GP surgery to my final discharge I doubt that the service could have been improved. I would like to thank all those involved and put on record how straightforward a process treating this small lesion was that had the potential to become something more serious had I ignored it.
