I visited Sick Kids this week with my 15 month old who may or may not have swallowed a magnet at bed time. We obviously arrived at the post club ‘I’ve banged my head’ rush as it was really really busy with bandaged heads and sports strips among other things. We were super well attended to the whole way through despite how busy it was. I felt like an idiot as I couldn’t even say for sure that he’d even swallowed the thing. The staff were so reassuring that we’d done the right thing in coming and making me feel the exact opposite to an idiot.
We had to go for an X-ray by which time everyone was tired and my 4 year old who was with us was concerned about what an X-ray was like and what would happen with her brother who was crying by now as he was so tired. I asked if she could look in the room to see it before we went for the X-ray but the radiographer went so much further than that and let her witness the X-ray and see the picture on the screen and explained all about everything. AND she got a sticker for being so good!
This morning my 4 year old went into nursery and told them all about the special hospital that’s just for children and about how the X-ray worked and why happened. “But thankfully he hadn’t swallowed the magnet” she concluded to her teachers. And thankful we are to the amazing staff and the whole NHS for being our every day heroes.
