"Knee Replacement fitted twice & its still wrong!"

About: Lister Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I had one knee replacement by a surgeon @ Lister and never had a problem & have never had to return other than for 5 yearly check.

Then 4yrs ago I had my other knee replaced. From day 1 it was wrong & I ended up staying as an in patient for around 9 days. After discharge, some 2/3 weeks later I was referred back to Lister via my GP & was re admitted. Surgeon who did it was not happy & made that clear to my wife & I. Discharged & still in pain with the swollen knee. Admitted another couple of times before a Physio found it was over 20 degrees out of alignment! Back on patient list & left severely limping poor gate. Wrote explaining this would damage my hips & the other knee. 3 years after fitting I eventually had another full knee replacement. Same things happened & surgeon was obnoxious at our return and tried to get me removed from his list by saying I was aggressive & he feared for his safety. Only he forgot that my wife who is a senior sister & myself who also worked for the health service for 10yrs! Its a known ploy when a doctor doesn't like or has problems they can refuse to treat you if your aggressive. Ive never been aggressive in my life, Im not big enough for one thing & I deplore violence. The NHS had sent him for Training & they put him on monitoring for 6 months(from memory) The NHS and he apologised & not being vindictive, we even agreed to see him again to try & resolve the problems. However, he could not see anything that he could do that would improve my knee so we were eventually transferred to see his boss who was in charge of the Orthopaedics in general. He admitted something was wrong & we tried or he tried doing a Nerve Block injection but due to a mix up we did not get a followup appointment until nearly a year later & we could not remember if it improved things or not! We have now been referred to another specialist hospital in London for either reconstructive surgery or Amputation! The whole experience has been a prolonged mitigated disaster and as a result may cost me the leg from the knee down! Not only this, it is now some 5 or 6yrs since the first knee replacement was undertaken on that leg. I felt like I was being boycotted in the vain hope that I might die of something else first! On one occasion when on the ward awaiting for the consultant to do some procedure that was continually delayed due to lack of theatre time or not enough staff, it had got to Friday & I had been told they would do the operation on the Saturday morning.

I had been on the ward for 5 days & had never seen the consultant once since being admitted!

Then on the Friday night at 2230hrs a Junior doctor came to my bedside & said that I could go home & they would prefer if I left immediately in case they needed the bed over the weekend! The consultant didn't have the decency to have seen me himself & they were getting rid of me with no treatment or apology. I refused to leave that night as my wife was in bed & left the following day.

You clearly are very unhappy with your experience of your second knee replacement, for which we are sorry.

If you have not raised a complaint, then please consider doing so - you can email the complaints team at patcomplaints.enh-tr@nhs.net and they will be happy to get an investigation underway in to your concerns.
