"Inverclyde Royal Infirmary - Treatment and care following surgery."

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Inverclyde Royal Infirmary in May 2018 for major bowel surgery.

From the moment I entered the hospital and was introduced to the admission and theatre staff I was treated with the utmost care and understanding. At all times I felt I was in extremely capable hands.  Every aspect of  the processes involved in my surgery was fully explained to me and I felt that any questions or concerns I had were dealt with in a supportive and a caring manner.

Following surgery I was admitted to the HDU and again I found the staff to be highly professional and caring.

I was subsequently admitted to ward H south and spent the next several days there.

Arlene in her capacity as the Enhanced Recovery Nurse had a very positive influence in my recovery as did every member of the staff team working there. From the senior nurses to the students and auxiliary nursing staff there was a very clear demonstration of a care practice which was caring and compassionate and focused on achieving the best recovery outcomes for each of the patients in their care.

Prior to my discharge from hospital I personally thanked many of the nursing staff for the level of care which was provided to me.

That said, I feel I owe several members of staff a very special thanks. I will always remember the particular care and gentle manner of William who in his capacity as an auxiliary nurse on the ward helped me take those first few steps into the shower where I was able to bathe and for the first time examine the extent of my surgery. I admit that this was a very vulnerable time for me and without William's support that day I would not have been able to deal as well with this very necessary function. William's support in this instance will not be forgotten by me.

I also extend my thanks to Kat who was one of the domestic staff on the ward. I sometimes feel that the contribution which the non nursing staff can make in patient recovery can be overlooked. Kat and her colleagues always had a smile and would chat as they went about their very busy cleaning schedules.

In conclusion I extend my thanks to all the staff members who participated in the treatment and care of my illness. You have all left me with a very positive impression of Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Dear Benmac

Thank you for sharing such a positive story about the care you received during your recent admission to the IRH. The staff will be delighted and somewhat humbled by your comments. You beautifully describe what excellent person centred care should be and that it was consistent throughout your entire journey is a testament to the commitment of staff.

I will ensure that your post is shared with those involved in your care, particularly Arlene, Kat and William.

I hope that you recovering well at home.

Kind regards
