I would just like to share how good my recent appointment was with Mr Canty who was standing in for my previous consultant.
It was a great and pleasant experience Mr Canty had obviously looked at my complications prior to my visit but was still open and happy to listen to my long history of complications. Having dealt with consultants/medics all my life I know the listening skill alone is worth it’s weight in gold, especially at a first meeting. He took the time to really show and make sure I understood the MRI scans I had along with the prognosis and more importantly wanted me back to a clinic appointment with further investigations. Just knowing you are being checked up on and not forgotten or pushed out when you are going through live changing circumstances also shows compassion. I did not feel rushed even though I’m sure he was a very busy chap.I can only hope medics like Mr Canty can be encouraged to stay. People, empathy, and listening skill are not always skills that can be taught.
