My wife was referred from Oncology Outpatients for urgent treatment for a pleural effusion, She attended at Emergency Care that same afternoon but as a result of 'bed blockage' in Ward 7, the relevant ward, she was kept waiting in Emergency Care for four days before being transferred to Ward 7. As it was a Bank Holiday Weekend she did not undergo the necessary procedure until a week after she was first admitted.
The following day she was advised late morning that she was being discharged and was moved to the Day Room in order to release her bed. She waited for hours for her medication to come from the Pharmacy and it was only at 6pm when I attended at the ward in frustration that her medication was found in a 'sluice room'. I wonder how long she would have had to wait if I had not called.?
I[we] have no complaints about the quality of care. The nursing staff in particular do an excellent job in very trying and difficult circumstances, The unavailability of a bed is not down to them. As a layman, I did get the impression that some of the patients in the ward should possibly have been in care elsewhere.
