"Lack of understanding from Thyroid Specialists"

About: St Mary's Hospital / Endocrinology

(as a service user),

I have 2 auto immune conditions. Systemic Lupus, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Both very nasty, debilitating conditions.

I have been 'treated' with Levothyroxine for over 6 years ( for my underactive thyroid ) ..still with no easing of symptoms - in fact, they are getting worse.

I was referred to an endocrinologist at my local hospital..who  came across as cold, unsympathetic and disinterested. They constantly suggest that I need anti depressants ( as does the GP).

I have explained that I am not depressed. I am simply sick and tired of not being treated properly. The attitude seems to be " oh..underactive thyroid..have some Levothyroxine, it works for everybody - now go away!"

I have read dozens of articles about NDT ( natural dessicated thyroid ) , derived from pig thyroid...all saying that this ( for most patients ) is a wonder drug, and after years of suffering, patients have started taking NDT and got their life back.

I have asked 2 of my GP's and the specialist about trying me on this drug..both have 'poo-poo'd' the idea..and flatly refused. They say it's because it is not on the list of UK approved drugs.

I have taken in pages of evidence, showing the thousands of happy people that have flourished by taking NDT, and have begged to at least be able to try it.  You can get a private prescription from a private NHS specialist apparently, but everyone that I have seen has just refused.

I have found a specialist in London that does have some patients on this NDT but they are 'private' and their initial consultation fee is £295 for 30 minutes, with follow ups costing £200 each time.

As I live on the Isle of Wight, travel costs to London or the other areas that these Private GP's work, will cost around £100 each time..making the average visit £300.

WHY OH WHY will NHS not prescribe this drug!

These private specialists also work for the NHS but will only consider it if you pay their extortionate private fees, plus the high private prescription fee on top?

This is utterly unbelievable and just not right. Pay and you can have it.

Well, I simply cannot afford that amount of money but some lucky person who is well off can afford the fees and get the drug.

Patient care for the not well off is non existent in many cases.
