"Wishaw maternity"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I recently gave birth to my third child in wishaw general. I was a planned induction and was given first pessary at 1pm and was then examined at 5: 30pm and was 2cm dilated, I was then given another pessary and by 7pm had started having quite intense pains, I was given paracetamol and dihydrocodeine for pain relief but by 7: 30pm the pains were getting stronger and I requested gas and air to which I was told I couldn't get as I wasn't in established labour and would not be examined again until 11: 30pm. By 8pm I couldn't handle the pains and my partner again requested gas and air for me and was told again that I couldn't get this until I was re-examined at 11: 30pm. At 8: 30pm my partner requested gas and air again for me and was told I could have pethidine or go for a bath both of which I declined. Eventually at 8: 40pm I was brought mobile gas and air cylinder. I was told again that I wasn't in labour and the pains I was getting were just from the pessary and that I couldn't be examined until 11: 30pm as if I was examined early then the gel would move place and the pains would get worse. About 9: 30pm I asked my partner to go and get a midwife as I felt that the baby was going to be born soon. I was then moved to a labour room and my baby was born just after 10pm. The midwife at the delivery of my baby was amazing and the delivery itself went well and the aftercare I received was very good but I feel a bit let down by the fact I was denied my requested pain relief on 3 occasions and told I wasn't in labour and wouldn't be examined until a set time and in actual fact I had delivered my baby over one hour before the time I was next due to be examined. This is the third baby I have had at wishaw general and my second induction and had used gas and air for my two previous deliveries and was quite anxious about this labour and don't understand why I was not allowed my choice of pain relief when requested and told I had to wait until a certain time even though I was experiencing intense pain. It made the experience as a whole quite stressful as I was in a ward with 3 other women and one of their partners and had to go through the majority of my labour without the pain relief I had requested.
