"Rude nurse!"

About: Bideford Hospital

My son suffers with asthma , every time he has a attack he usually requires steroids to keep

Him on track from home to prevent going to hospital.

His asthma started to get bad And wasn’t getting better with the pumps I could give him , he couldn’t even walk 10 paces without getting breathless . I took him to our local doctors to find they was closed for training , so I thought next closest care was bideford . I only wanted to see a someone to get a nebuliser to keep him going and to get steroids if needed rather than waiting for him to get bad and have a ambulance called . I got to Bideford and the receptionist was excellent she could see my son struggling and went and grabbed the nurse who was with me whithin 3 mins . She was very rude and made me feel silly for taking my son there to get a nebuliser and help!i was hoping after a nebuliser it would settle him and to acces what to do next.

I’m was told Very rudely I should have taken him to Barnstaple as it’s not her place to be dealing with that! She made me then carry my son out to the car gasping so I could give him a 10 pumps of blue inhalers to keep his breathing while she left and her colleague called a ambulance which then my son was admitted to having back to back nubilisers and oral steroids for days . I wouldn’t have taken him there if he doctors was

Open as they are brilliant with my son when he has these attacks . I have learnt for next time I won’t be using bideford for help again! We have taking my daughter there before many times which other nurses put her straight on nebuliser and wasn’t a problem. I understand they are a minor injuries unit but surely they can help with nebulisers?

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and I am sorry your recent visit to the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Bideford Hospital did not meet your expectations.

You must have felt anxious when your son was having an asthma attack and you knew that a nebuliser and steroids would have helped with his breathing. I apologise that the nurse who reviewed your son was rude and made you feel silly for taking him to the MIU rather than the North Devon District Hospital (NDDH).

I hope your son is now feeling better and that he does not experience another asthma attack too soon.

I would welcome the opportunity to look into your concerns in order to provide you with a full investigation and response, and would ask that you either telephone or e-mail the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01271 314090 or ndht.pals@nhs.net for further support.

Kind regards

Jayne
