I underwent a colonoscopy procedure at the Gemini unit recently. At each stage of the process, from the referring doctor to the receptionists to the paramedics prepping for the consultant I felt that everyone was acting extremely professionally and ensuring that I understood everything that was going to happen. Prior to going in for the appointment there was considerable engagement conducting pre-procedure questionnaires and receiving courtesy calls to ensure that I could take the necessary laxatives etc to prepare for the procedure. On the day I was prepped within half an hour of my appointment and seen by the consultant within three-quarters of an hour. I had elected not to have any sedation or pain relief medication and the staff, despite saying it was unusual, were happy to respect my wishes. The procedure was completed by the consultant with considerable expertise and sensitivity and I was engaged in decisions throughout and able to watch what was happening on the large screen, Although having a small camera inserted into your rectum and up into your colon is not the most dignified of procedures I was happy that the paramedics and trainee nurse in the room were also respectful & willing to engage in conversation which made the whole experience much less stressful than it could have been.. The recovery room staff were also attentive and ensured that I was properly informed of the outcome of the colonoscopy which thankfully was that there was no reason for concern.
