"Waiting time for orthopedic appointment following Dr referral"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

At the end of last December I heard from my GP that my xray had shown calcification in my shoulder joint and that an appointment would be necessary with the orthopedic and trauma department to have this sorted.   The condition is very painful and prevents me from sleeping.   I have waited 20 weeks and contacted the hospital department to be told that they are very busy covering the area in Scotland and get back in touch with my own GP.   I got in touch with my GP who tried to chase this appointment with the hospital only to get the same response.   My GP agreed this was not acceptable.   Only when I raised a complaint to the board did an appointment fall on my doormat for another month away for the end of June.   This has left me in constant pain, unable to sleep and taking more medication.   Surely this is not acceptable to wait to see a consultant when evidence that treatment has been already identified in an x ray as required.   Its very disappointing and more clinics should be offered and funding obtained from Scottish Government to provide a better referral system and waiting time.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear PainfullyAnnoyed,

I can only apologise for this extremely long and difficult wait. I know this does not help when you are in pain and can't sleep. I really can appreciate why you are disappointed and I agree that this is an inordinately long time to wait. It can be easily misunderstood how debilitating a sore shoulder can be. (Having had one, I really do understand how painful it can be).

I am also sorry that it took a formal complaint to make your appointment come earlier.

If I may, I would like to add that this service is under immense pressure and they are doing all they can under the circumstances they are faced with. I am not saying this to defend your long, painful and inconvenient wait; more of an explanation rather.

I wish you all the best for your operation next month and a very speedy recovery.

Best wishes,

Eunice
