I unexpectedly went into pre-term labour at 33 weeks after my waters broke. I firstly called the delivery suite instead of the Maternity Day Care as it was the middle of the night, I was told to come to labour ward to be assessed. I was put on a monitor once the Midwife had confirmed my waters had broke but cervix fully closed. The monitor was picking up my contractions regularly. I was in a fairly tricky situation in that they wanted to hold of labour until I was further along in the pregnancy, but I also had Group B Strep, which could cause infection especially now my waters had gone. The monitor started to pick up that my baby’s heart rate kept dropping dangerously low, so before I knew it i was whisked round to theatre for an Emergency Section under General Anesthetic. Once little George was born, he was taken straight to NICU where he was cared for over night. A day later he was taken to SCBU to establish feeding and gain weight. He suffered a little Jaundice, but had a day of photo therapy to treat that. George was in SCBU for 2 weeks. The staff from the moment I came to labour ward to when we left SCBU two weeks later made the experience a positive to time, even though myself and partner were both scared, sad and worried about going into labour early and also not being able to bring our baby home. The midwives, nurses, consultants and doctors that cared for my self and my baby made me feel so at ease. Thankyou to everyone in the labour ward, Folkestone ward, maternity day care, NICU and SCBU.
