I do not usually use the GP surgery as can obtain minor ailments at the local pharmacy or other health professionals such as opticians, chiropodists. This time I had severe pain and the receptionist informed me to go online which I did and could book an appointment, but with this there will be a small wait around up to 14 days, I booked then called again a few days later due to my pain not receding and the pharmacist informed me to see GP asap. I called and managed to get an appointment same day late morning.
I think the issue is our perceptions and expectations. There is far too much demand on GP time and burden on the NHS services. Overall I am happy with the service provided even though I concur it is difficult to get through in the morning. As for front line receptionists, I have always found them to be professional and courteous at the times I visited. They do a wonderful job and it is unfortunate at time people expect far too much, we would should equally show respect and behave in a certain manner.
