"Great for simple medical issues but useless..."

About: Elm Surgery

I’ve been with this practice for a number of years and it used to be fabulous and I would have recommended it to anyone but over the last few years it’s gone downhill and now I really wouldn’t recommend it. If you’ve got a ‘routine’ health issue like tonsillitis or a chest infection then it’s fine but anything that needs more time and attention then it becomes really difficult. Firstly it’s nearly impossible to get an appointment with the same doctor twice which makes continuity a big issue. Secondly when you do get that appointment it’s normally around a month away which isn’t suitable for every medical complaint. When you end up seeing more than one doctor for the same problem their opinions differ and their advice conflicts, sometimes massively. As another reviewer has pointed out you wait weeks or even a month for an appointment then you only have 10 minutes to discuss the problem with no option for a longer appointment or a follow up appointment (unless you wait another month) to properly discuss and get the problem dealt with properly. I can’t mention any names but there are a few doctors at the practice who are really good and really put lots of effort in to successfully treating / resolving your problem but there are others who are rude and dismissive of your concerns which really isn’t helpful.

We were very sorry to read your comments.

Unfortunately like other services in the NHS we have been overwhelmed with demand and as such, we agree that waiting times for routine appointments have suffered more than we would like. This hasn’t been helped by the recent closures of local surgeries within the area. However, please be assured we are taking steps to try to improve the availability of appointments, by adding extra doctor sessions.

We do try to encourage patients to see the same doctor for on-going problems to allow continuity but sadly again this is not always possible.

Our call back service allows patients with urgent medical problems to be seen on the same day. It also allows patients who are unable to wait for the next routine appointment to speak with a doctor who can offer an appointment earlier.

If you encounter these problems again please feel free to contact Sarah Giles, Practice Manager or Julia Barker, Operations Manager who will do their best to help you.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.
