"My Emergency Crisis Team Experience"

About: Carseview Centre / General Psychiatry

(as a service user),

I went to Ninewells A & E due to mental health crisis and suicidal impulses. I was sent to carseview after 9 after the senior doctor spoke to the crisis team who said they would be happy to see me.

It’s now almost midnight and no one has come near me. There are no water fountains/drink machines and luckily my husband came with me as he went to ask where the toilets were since I was too scared/anxious and the lady in the office snapped at him that they were talking to someone. Didn’t even let him ask anything.

We were told that they started at 9 with 3 people waiting and they only have two doctors.  If I had been alone and followed my urges I could have self harmed ages ago and no one would have noticed yet.

Dear "Fuchs"

Thank you for sharing your comments regarding your experience of the assessment clinic.

When people attend for an assessment we adopt an appointment system whereby people attending for emergency assessments are offered an appointment within 4 hours. However appointment times can change dependant on how busy we are.

I recognise there are some improvements that can be made to the waiting area, including the sharing of some welcome information. This information should include how to access vending machines, public toilets available in the hospital and how to contact members of the Crisis Team. We will progress these improvements and thank you again for your helpful feedback.

Our experienced staff are aware that people awaiting assessment can be distressed and should be professional, courteous and compassionate at all times. I apologise if this was not the case on this occasion.

I note your concern regarding what might have happened if your husband had not been with you. If someone attends for assessment alone then a member of staff will always sit with them in the waiting area.

Thank you again for your feedback.
