"They were amazing"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU) University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was taken into Adult Critical care in April and I was sent for as his condition was critical.

The doctors and nurses were never far from him giving him the most amazing attention and being so compassionate towards me too. His condition deteriorated in the next two days and the doctors nurses etc had relentlessly tried everything and the surgeons came to me to tell me he may only have 2 to three days left but they were so kind to me.

Over the next 6 days they fought hard to save him then operated again and it wasn’t good news again but in those days they kept me updated on every aspect and were so caring towards me too.

Unfortunately the operation didn’t quite help and two days later they had to take him back to surgery and amputate his arm to save his life. The surgeons done an amazing job and the nurses worked their hearts out attending to him non stop. It was humbling to watch their expertise and brilliance of everyone concerned. My son spent 13 days in A.C.C.U. and the surgeons, doctors and nurses worked their hearts out to save my son and I will always be indebted to them for that. The way they looked after me too when they were so busy was astounding. They are truly special and dedicated people.

My son was then taken to wards 15, 14, and 17 where he was then taken care of by the most hardworking overstretched nurses. They were all amazing as were the O.Ts, Physiotherapists, pain team, diabetic team, and Miss Bramley. I also have to add that the restaurant staff and the cafe staff were so caring and always asked how I was it meant so much, and when my son went to them they treated him so well making sure he didn’t feel awkward not being able to do most things with just one hand they were all amazing I will never be able to thank all involved enough.

Wishaw Hospital has the most amazing staff I have ever encountered and should be so proud of everyone no matter what department.

I also had to go for a biopsy myself when my son was so ill to Dr. Shaffrali’s clinic and they seen the state I was in and Leslie helped me so much and spoke to the receptionists at outpatients dept. They rushed me through the biopsy, blood tests, and Dr. Shaffrili’s appointment to let me get back to sit with my son which I will always be grateful for they were amazing. I want everyone concerned to know how much I appreciate what was done for my son and I and I will never forget the kindness shown to us by all in Wishaw General.

I am so sorry to hear that your son and yourself have had to go through such a terribly worrying time. Being in hospital can be a very daunting experience and I am very pleased that despite your worry and your son's pain, you and your son had a positive experience.

I oversee the catering department for Serco and I will make sure that your kind comments are passed onto them. As you mention, we are very proud of our staff at Serco. Their aim is to treat all users of the hospital with care and compassion. Taking the time to let us know your time with us is just amazing.

Finally, I hope your son continues to get better and thank you once again for the feedback.

Take care

Rhona Dunsmore Serco Soft Services General Manager
