"First Class Breast Screening service and..."

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital / Breast surgery

I was referred to the Breast Clinic at The Luton & Dunstable Hospital by my GP, and can only say what an efficient professional and caring service I have received!

The staff here are first class, really concerned about your dignity and taking the time to explain what they were doing, at a time when you are anxious and nervous.

My consultant was simply excellent . She took the time to really listen to what I was saying , and then took the time to explain what the results of the scan showed, and what the next steps were that just instilled confidence and my own understanding, and I cannot praise her enough.

I was seen very quickly , and in 8 days (from initial scan) had had my operation, which is brilliant!

The admission staff, and theatre and recovery staff were all professional and caring and good humoured ( at 7am in the morning !) I am short sited and had put my glasses in my bag, so one of the theatre staff let me hook arms with her and guided me to where I was going !

My consultant I saw on the day of my surgery and just before being put to sleep by the anaesthetist which I again felt made such a difference in keeping me calm and building confidence.I cannot praise the staff I encountered enough.

However..

My only criticism, would be the parking and being picked up post surgery and security staff at the hospital, and this is where the care and compassion fell down.

Currently there is building work at the front of the hospital, so pick off and drop off is not allowed. However there is a place right out side the surgical block that cars could park to pick up post surgery patients ( used for deliveries I believe)

As I was a day surgery patient the recovery staff had instructed that due to me having morphine, etc I needed to be escorted to the car. My sister, had a great deal of trouble getting one particular security guard to understand that she just needed to go upstairs and escort me down and could she park for a few minutes to do this.

He expected her to park in a side street several minutes way, and then find a wheel chair and wheel me to wherever she had found to park. This lacked understanding on security I feel. After a lot of disagreement she asked the security guard to call recovery and speak to the staff.

She was allowed in eventually, but with quite bad grace by the security guard.

Having had breast surgery it was good to be able to just step into a car and not be wheeled for several streets, and I hope that this can be addressed.

Thank you again

Breast Clinic and Surgical team you are stars!!
