"Visited A&E following a fall . proximal..."

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital / Accident and emergency

Following X-ray and fracture diagnosed I was seen by a male nurse who put my arm in a collar and cuff sling . I commented the sling was too tight around my wrist , his reply it needed to be like that but it will stretch . ( 2 days later my wrist was sore with a blister .i attended local minor injury dept and they kindly applied a new collar and cuff sling ) He told I could go home and I would receive a f/up in fracture clinic. Was told to keep sling on but could take it off to shower.

I was handed a folded sheet of paper which I stupidly assumed was advice as how to manage my arm .

Surprised when I looked at the sheet it just said about X-ray being checked by doctor and that I would be sent an appointment for the fracture clinic.

NO ADVICE about coping with this very painful injury or what exercises to do.

I received f/up for fracture clinic but this was not for 2weeks!!

I looked on line and found info that other hospitals give to specific injuries advising important

Exercises for wrist , hand and elbow to prevent problems arising. Also most said fracture clinic would see within a few days . Also important points not to do. Plus practical advice

How to manage and promote a good healing and good post injury mobilisation.

I am fortunate in that I have nursed for many years and have some experience in shoulder surgery post op care. And knew how painful injuries and surgery to the shoulder is and recovery to mobilise shoulder /arm is long. But I think The RSCH should have discharge advice sheets to give to

patients following injuries of what they should expect and how to manage their injury.

To be 2 weeks before fracture clinic appointment is a long time without some info regarding

PAIN and how to control this plus practical advice how to dress /shower /sleep etc.which is all very difficult.

Once seen in the fracture clinic at 2 weeks , 4 weeks &6weeks care and advice from

Consultant and registrars has been excellent.

I am now without the sling as break healed and now beginning the hard work with physio to get my shoulder as mobile as possible to get back to work and driving .(nearly 9weeks since injury)

A shame The RSCH do not give discharge advice when discharged from A&E.

Something I am sure would benefit patients to remove worry and to have a knowledge of what to expect.
