I had my little boy here in 2015 and the birth and care was everything I had hoped for and more. The midwives were wonderful and stuck to my birthing plan and the care afterwards was brilliant. However back in Feb 2018 for my little girl was awful and traumatising. I want to stress that the staff were understanding and lovely but to simply put it there were not enough of them. When I arrived I was only in the early stages of labour (11.30pm) however I was in so much pain I could walk out of the ward so the midwife let me stay under "observation" no one had any time to observe me, and by 1.50am I was in tremendous agony and told my partner to fetch a midwife, he was told everyone was too busy and they'd come when they could. It wasn't until I was screaming in agony that two student midwives ran in to help and my little girl was born at 2.10am These midwives didn't know mine or my partners name or any of our medical history they just ran in as soon as they heard my screams... they announced the gender of my daughter which I had wanted my partner to do, yet they weren't to know.
again I want to stress the staff were brilliant at their jobs but they were stretched too far. We were left for 4-5 hours straight after the birth, told not to shower or dress little one as they would come back in straight away to weigh her... that didn't happen until 7am.. the room was absolutely freezing, which caused my little one to lose a lot of heat and cause me distress. The bed wasn't working so I had to climb in and out. Blood everywhere, and then we were never transferred out the labour ward. My little one wasn't weighed until 7am, and then all of a sudden there was a huge rush to get us out the hospital, and by 11am we were discharged.... they didn't even check we were okay. We hadn't slept at all (no pillows or blankets for me or my partner) and let us drive home not having slept for 24 hours ?
If this was my first birth it would've put me off going back here but the whole ordeal has left me absolutely traumitised. It's awful because my first birth was amazing and there were plenty of staff but now you can see all the cuts first hand. The midwives work so hard they shouldn't have to stretch themselves to the extent they do.
