"A Colonoscopy story."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

I arrived at my allotted appointment time at the Endoscopy suite (with butterflies aplenty fluttering in my stomach), for a Colonoscopy. There was a bit of a delay in being seen, but i appreciate that the department is very busy, so no real problem for me. I was taken to a room where i had a chat about the procedure, blood pressure was taken, and a signature was required on a consent form. Then it was off to the waiting/holding room, where i put my clothes into a bag, and changed into a natty gown. Shortly after, i was taken to the room where the Colonoscopy was to take place, and asked to lie on a bed next to a display screen, the Doctor Introduced himself, followed by confirmation of my details, a bllod pressure collar was attached to my arm, and a heart rate measurer on my finger. I was asked to roll onto my left side, then the procedure started.

It went without any problems, with discomfort levels well within tolerable levels. I didn't need any sedation, though some gas and air was at hand if need be. I watched the procedure on the screen, following the endoscope at it made it's way around the large bowel, which was interesting. Three tiny polyps were found, which were removed painlessly. And soon, it was all over. I was was then wheeled into the recovery room, where i was offered, and accepted, a cup of tea and some biscuits, very nice. I was a little apprehensive before my visit, but i needn't have been. The staff were great, and as you would expect very professional at their jobs.
