"Does its job but improvements very necessary"

About: The Hathersage Centre

This clinics massively oversubscribed with young people coming from the two close (and pretty large) universities nearby. Wait times even after arriving half an hour early can be up to 2 hours. I was told to go here by my GP to pick up the contraceptive pill when my GP clinic said they couldn't help.

It feels as though all the university students seeking sexual help and advice are penned into one huge line and told to wait to see one, maybe two doctors/ nurses. The system is ok but not in any way efficient, its a bit of a scramble to get seen. For the amount of people that go to this clinic its really understaffed and if you get there more than an hour after its opened you will be turned away. I have been to another in London and haven't had to wait more than 10/15 minutes.

I wouldn't recommend it, but there is quite literally no where else to go.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience at the Hathersage Centre of the Manchester University Hospitals via the NHS Choices website. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided for the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

We were sorry to read about your recent unsatisfactory experience when you tried accessing the Northern Contraception Sexual Health and HIV Service. Due to the high demand for our service, we are continually looking at how we can address this concern by making some of our services accessible online so that patients can avoid the long waiting times and be able to access the service more quickly. These services can be found on our website, http://www.thenorthernsexualhealth.co.uk/ which also includes the latest information regarding opening times of our clinics which you can attend. We also put updates on the website on a regular basis and we would like to encourage patients to use the 'our clinics' section for our opening times.

It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk, quoting reference number PO18/0050.
