"Respect to other patients"

About: Chorley & South Ribble Hospital

I spent 6 days on Rookward ward and personally could not fault my experience, however I was horrified by the lack of respect to the dementia patients on the ward by SOME of the day staff, if only they were half as good as they thought they were. One particular incidence took place on Saturday afternoon (29th May) when two young nurses came onto the ward to feed tea to a couple of the dementia patients. The patients didn't respond when asked if they wanted their food. As there was no response to the Nurses, they proceeded to play on their mobile phones on a dating sight and giggle and shriek about what they were writing, it was totally dis-respectful and I found it very upsetting. Most of the day staff - especially the staff nurse, were very professional and sorted any problems out as soon as possible. The three Night staff were absolutely superb, they worked so well together, it was poetry in motion.

I do not suffer from Dementia.

Thank you for your feedback on your stay on Rookwood ward. Firstly can I say that I am glad you could not fault your own personal stay on the ward. I will also pass on your comments to the staff on days and nights who you describe as "very professional, absolutely superb", - and I am glad to hear they sorted any problems out for you – this is the standard I expect on the ward.

I am concerned to hear that not all staff portrayed this professional behaviour however, and I would like to discuss this further with you if possible, to identify the staff involved, so that I can also discuss this further with them, in order to explain the standards required at all times, with no exceptions, and so that no other patients experience the attitude they displayed in this instance. Please can I apologise for their behaviour and reassure you, and any others reading this, that this is not the standard of care which all our other staff strive very hard to give.

All regular staff on Rookwood A receive level 2 training on Dementia Care, so they are trained in providing compassionate individualised care for patients with dementia. We also have numerous Dementia Champions on the ward who are so enthusiastic about providing the best possible care to our elderly, vulnerable patients, who may also have Dementia, that they have been nominated for awards within the Trust. I feel very disappointed that two members of staff, whether regular staff or visiting staff have acted in this manner. The rest of the staff will also be extremely disappointed that their good work has been in part undone by two others acting in this unprofessional manner.

Please accept my apologies.

Jane V Carey

Ward Manager Rookwood A.
