"Thank you to everyone who took care of me, you all..."

About: Kettering General Hospital

What I liked

I was anxious about having a laparoscopy and was put first on the list to help me keep calm. The staff even though there wasn't many seemed to cope rather well with amount of patients that needed care and attention. I noticed that everyone on my ward was checked regulary and was asked if there was anythng they could do I was even asked if I needed more pillows to ake me more comfortable!

What could be improved

I was surprised that even though I was 100% sure about being sterilised I was not offered councilling of any kind even if it was only a 1/2 hour session I feel that some people may need this to ensure they was making the right decision as it is a life change not something that can be reversed!

Anything else?

I had a appointment to talk about this procedure and felt that this had been slightly rushed, I wasgrateful that I had done alot of research into this before actually attending the hospital as I dont feel that all the information was available. This could however be because I had made things clear that I had researched and found many forms of information regarding Laparoscopy sterlisation. I was asked if I had spoken to my husband about this which I said I had but once again no-one actually asked him how he felt about this apart from on the actual day it was said that a vasectomy may of been an easier choice!

I was kept well informed about how to take care of myself afterwards but have been told no follow up appointment is needed, I am surprised about this so will be making a appointment with my gp just to clarify a couple of questions I now have!

I am glad that this proceedure has happened and thankful for the care I have had I was surprised that my notes was actually read and was also asked questions on earlier illness's that I had forgotten to bring to the doctors attention! I'd like to say thank you for putting me at ease and taking care of me it has made me realise that Kettering isn't as bad as I originally thought!

Thank you for your comment on NHS Choices. I am glad that overall you had a good experience and would recommend our service.

I have however taken note of your comment regarding improving our service further. I am sorry you felt rushed and have discussed this with the Consultant Gynaecologists who have taken your comments on board.

Counselling for sterilisation should commence with patients GP to ensure the referral to hospital is what each patient wants however all patients who are seen in out patients are again counselled regarding the procedure to ensure informed consent. Legally partner/husbands views cannot be considered as part of the consent process .

Thank you for taking the time and opportunity to feedback regarding the care you had and overall we did a fantastic job.
