"Wonderful care only spoilt by many dementia..."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Cardiology

I was admitted last Friday and again on Monday with mild chest pains which I recognised having experienced a full heart attack previously.

The paramedics and ambulance crew were lovely.

A & E where far improved over my previous experience 12 years ago.

My stay in the ward on Friday night was made very uncomfortable by a troublesome patient who kept threaten the nurses, "get me some soup or I will kick off".

I was discharged at 4am approx. with negative blood test.

I think too much reliance is placed on the blood test.

Admitted again on Monday with same but more severe symptoms.

A & E and ambulance wonderful.

Placed in acute medical ward with 4 out of 6 beds occupied by patients suffering severe dementia.

They gave the nursing staff a bad time and kept me awake all night by the continuous noise they were making despite the best efforts of the nurses.

I felt awful in the morning partly due to the lack of sleep.

The day time ward nurse was terrific.

I was mid morning I was interviewed by a consultant who I felt was a little arrogant, talking down to me, and perhaps with the suggestion I should come back as a day patient which I seriously considered to get away from the demented patients.

Mid afternoon I was transferred to the CIU ward which was much, much quieter and the nursing care exemplary and so kind and caring.

The next day I suffered a minor heart attack and was rushed into theatre for treatment.

The theatre appeared brand new with the most professional, kind staff.

The operating consultant was professional and thorough, quickly identifying and rectifying the problem.

It was much better than my experience with a similar procedure 12 years previously

I was discharged the following day and I am exceptionally grateful to the CIU nurses who got me treated so quickly before more damage was done to my heart.

They were exemplary.

In summary, the Treliske staff do a magnificent job under unreasonable demanding patient pressure.

I also believe the blood test for a cardiac incident is not reliable in my case.

I believe too much reliance is put on its results

Dear Anonymous

Thank you for sharing your experience whilst an inpatient at Royal Cornwall Hospital, I am sorry that you had cause to use our services but am pleased to learn that you felt our Emergency Department was far improved from your previous experience 12 years ago.

I apologise that it appears you were discharged too early after the result of your blood test and will ensure that your comments regarding this is passed to the relevant members of staff so that it can be addressed for any future patients.

The noise level on our Acute Medical wards can be challenging at times during the night due to patients with varying needs being cared for there until a bed becomes available on a more appropriate ward and as you mention the Nursing team always make every effort to ensure that minimum disruption is caused to other patients; however, I am sorry that on this occasion you experienced lack of sleep.

I am pleased that you noticed a difference once transferred to CIU and I will be delighted to pass your feedback on to the team as they will be thrilled to hear your kind words and praise. It is fabulous to hear that you received such professional and efficient treatment in theatre to rectify the problem which caused your minor heart attack.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience and I do hope that you are now recovering well from you admission.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient & Family Experience Coordinator
