I recently escorted a person with a dementia to the dentistry department at the hospital, and would like to praise the outstanding care that was received. The dentist put the person at ease, communicated fully and in manner that was understandable to them, and used visual demonstration to help the person adjust to the unfamiliar environment. The dentist also empowered and supported them to sign their own documentation, allowing them to fully participate in their care. Also going the extra mile to show us out of the department and asking if we had transport arrangements to get home. I was so overwhelmed by the standard of care; it really was such a positive experience for a person with a dementia to have, in an environment which for some could generate anxiety.
