"Great care, clean, but noisy!"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

Best Bits

Very caring, considerate, compassionate nursing staff both in Sitwell ward and pre-operation area. Always willing to explain and put my mind at ease . Very understanding of my embarrassment and considerate of maintaing my dignity.

Worst Bits

Very long wait in sitting room on day of op. Nurses often seemed too busy to help straight away and I found the ward too noisy to sleep well at night. I also felt that there was too much residual light at night from nurses desk.

There were some very noisy and overactive patients who prevented me from sleeping - I wonder if it would perhaps be a good idea to segregate in extreme circumstances. One patient kept getting up and pulling his drips and catheter tubing out, shouting for nurses, obviously in severe distress. This was consistent over 3 nights of my stay and occurred every 15-30 mins throughout all 3 nights. These actions required continual effort by nursing staff to reconnect him, clean him and his bed up and settle him down. It seemed to me, being kept awake through each situation, that if the nurse had only been allowed time to sit with this patient for half and hour, it could have been better understood why he was continuously putting himself through this repeated distressing pain of catheter disturbance.

Prior to going into hospital I had been told by a number of people that Rotherham DGH had a poor reputation for MRSA and poor standard of care. This left me nervous about my impending visit and aftercare. I have to say, this was completely unfounded - cleanliness was quite obvious with regular cleaning and the use of hand cleanser by all staff was extremely reassuring. Perhaps the only visible signs of dirt was in the A&E room where I had my initial catheter inserted. The ceiling tiles looked very dirty and had cobwebs hanging.

Overall, a memorable stay in hospital for the right reasons!

- Excellent care

- Reassuring explanations at all stages of my care

- Positive results in my care

- Wonderfully caring and reassuring nursing staff

Dear dancer3, thank you for sharing your story on Patient Opinion about the high standards of care you received during your stay at Rotherham Hospital. I am pleased to learn that our staff did everything they could to provide you with the information and reassurance that you needed and I will ensure your kind comments are passed onto the team concerned.

We are however really concerned to learn of your disturbed nights in relation to the needs of other patients and apologise that you got so little sleep. Better management of the sound environment at night is something that we are currently focussing on across the hospital and would therefore value learning more from you about your observations; if you could contact our Patient Services Department on 01709 304461, they will arrange for the Lead Nurse for Sitwell Ward to speak with you to explore this further.

With best wishes,
