"A surgery that heightens your anxiety."

About: Riverbank Medical Centre

1 : A telephone system has been put in place which is just ridiculous. You cannot ring & request an appointment via the receptionist. You speak to the receptionist saying you’d like an appointment & they then request your doctor to call you.

You have to then keep your phone on you. Watch your phone if you have to keep phone on silent & ensure you have reception. All instead of being given the next available appointment in the first phone call.

If you get the call ( !!!) you have to then tell your doctor why it is you need an appointment- most probably whilst in a public place. They then decide whether you need to be seen & give you an appointment. I’d love someone to clarify why this system makes sense....

2 : You are only allowed to see your doctor. Even in an emergency I have gone on & a doctor has been free to see me that wasn’t my doctor but I was not allowed to see them.

You cannot see another doctor UNLESS your doctor is away/day off. Then it miraculously isn’t a problem. You cannot request to see another doctor unless you put a request in writing to actually change doctors. Give it a few weeks & you are told that doctor request cannot be made due to them being full & unable to take on new patients. Again, I’d love someone to clarify why this makes sense : When no doctor in the surgery has ever rang me to find out how a medication is going or any call ever about anything to do with my health that they have seen me for, how they can be full ? It’s different if your appointment means your in their care but with this surgery you are not. You have an appointment. You go. You have another appointment when you request another one so what difference does it make who’s ‘on your list’ ??

3 : 9/10 with 3 different doctors my health concerns have been patronised. I have left there more than once feeling I have no where to turn for help, confused, not listened to & not helped. I have even been diagnosed over the phone having given symptoms that could lead to many a diagnosis and having not met the doctor before. I had to ring back & day no, I’d really like to see someone. I have even been told not to stress out the receptionist when I got upset that no doctors could see me & that I needed to be seen at some point by someone that day in an emergency.

4: One doctor there did not ask me in person or call me once in 5 years about a very heavy medication they had prescribed & it was just put on my repeat prescription sheet so I just kept getting it & taking it. Needless to say I got addicted. The doctor never took notice how long I’d been on it or asked about general health from it.

Do not go to this surgery. Unless you are in pain & need a pill prescribed then there brilliant !!! All about the money. No alternative holistic health care here.

Thank you for your comments about the practice and I am sorry to hear that you find the telephone triage system "ridiculous". The system was introduced to enable us to offer same day access to all our patients ,rather than them having to wait up to two weeks for an appointment. This enables us to see the sickest patients very quickly. We have stuck to personal lists for GP's to enable patients to have the continuity of seeing the same GP each time , following feedback from patients in our patient surveys, and it enables the doctor gets to know the patient and can therefore more easily recognise if their condition is changing.
