Back in Nov. 2017 I had a mastectomy and a lumpectomy at Kettering General Hospital. Despite frequent enquiries, my follow-on oncology appointment/radiotherapy at NGH did not commence until 16 weeks post surgery, despite NHS NICE guidelines of 6-8 weeks maximum. On the last day of a 3-week course of treatment (04.04.18) I was told my consultant wanted to see me in two weeks at KGH, not the usual six, and an appointment would be made with oncology that very day. I explained at the time I was willing to travel to NGH for my consultation if it made things easier/quicker. Nothing happened. On 20th April, I rang the contact I had been given to ask where was the appointment. She rang back later to say Oncology couldn't 'fit it in'until 14th May. I contacted PALS who checked with oncology dept., and an appointment had only been made that very day on the 20th April, after I had spoken to the nurse contact. Something is awry here, when consultant appointments are not made in a timely manner, for whatever reason, and the patient is caused an unnecessary and perhaps detrimental delay. I'm assuming the responsibility for making post-treatment consultant appointments lies with NGH. PALS has intervened and managed to secure me an earlier appointment on 9th May, for which I'm grateful, but It's still 3 weeks late.
