"Smoking outside hospital entrance"

About: Tameside General Hospital

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public. We have their details and will forward any comments to them. They said…

I think the hospital should vigorously pursue the issue of smoking all round the hospital grounds, and right outside the south door in regard to visitor, patients being wheeled out to smoke! and even some of the nursing staff. I am told that nothing can be done to prevent people smoking even right beside the notices saying "no smoking" on the hospital grounds.

Good afternoon

We are acutely aware of the problem and we have implemented a number of measures to address the issue you have raised.

The Trust’s aim is to discourage smoking on the hospital site and we work within the guidelines of Trust’s policies and procedures.

In addition to this, security officers and car park hosts are instructed to carry out regular patrols around the site to discourage smoking.

Unfortunately it is an ongoing issue, as we have no authority to prevent visitors to the hospital from smoking in the grounds. We also have to have a degree of empathy with patients and visitors who may be particularly distressed and use smoking as a mechanism for this.

We will continue to monitor this and assertively manage the situation where appropriate.
