"Breast Cancer diagnosis"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital / General medicine

(as a service user),

I had lumps in my left breast investigated at the Royal Berkshire Hospital through ultrasound and biopsy. For months I had been told by doctors at the hospital and a GP that it was necrotic tissue caused by the seat belt trauma from a bad RTA. I was expecting to discuss plastic surgery options so was completely shocked to be told that I had cancer. What was unbearable was that I was sent back to sit in a large, busy waiting room before I could talk to a Macmillan nurse. It was the worst 15 minutes of my life.

I wish there had been somewhere else that those given that terrible news could go and sit privately and have a good cry.

Many thanks for leaving your review on Care Opinion. We are so sorry that you received such devastating news. Unfortunately, in this busy clinic it is not always possible for the Macmillan Nurse Specialists to be with the patients when they receive diagnosis and the layout of the clinic means that patients sometimes do have to go back to the waiting room. All patients will be seen by the Nurse Specialist team during their visit and this consultation is in a private room. The Nursing Team do also give their details to patients so they can be contacted after clinic, as many patients have more questions when they have had more time to take in the news.

We will definitely take your feedback on board and use it when thinking about improvements to clinic space and layout in the future.

If you have further questions or would like to discuss your visit please get in touch with our Patient Relations team (0118 322 8338 or email talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk) who can organise this for you.
