"Medication issue"

(as the patient),

The staff had no idea about Parkinsons or the importance of getting medication on time. When I went into hospital there was quite a discussion about my medication and it was my wife and daughter who suggested I sign a self medication form otherwise I would still be arguing.

It was agreed I self medicate, but I had to ring for a nurse every dose. I would ring and a nurse would pop her head inside my door, I would tell them I was self medicating and off they went!!

Other than some of the medical staff seeming to have no idea or knowledge about Parkinsons, treatment was good by nursing staff.

Thanks for sharing your experience, which sounds rather frustrating!

The Somerset LINk (Local Involvement Network) is a patient organisation that will be turning into Local HealthWatch next year.

You might be interested to know that we are currently helping to set up a Neurological Alliance of patients and carers in order to help patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's have a greater say in how health services in Somerset are run. Education of staff seems to be an issue that a lot of patients have mentioned to us.
